When we were in Kauai, for the first time we tried a trail that pretty much required Lincoln to walk. We brought a carrier for each of the boys, but considering the fact that carrying one of them for two minutes makes my back start to seize up, we didn’t think putting our twenty-four pound Eliot on my back was the ideal situation.
So we just went with hope. And it worked. Lincoln was so excited to be on a trail and to go find the goats that we heard and so hyped up on the vacation in general that he went the whole two miles in roots, mud, and rocks.
That was 1.8 miles further then we made it today.
After a good morning nap from Eliot, despite the fact that it was now noon and hot, fresh and cocky off our success in Kauai, we decided to do a trail in Kaneohe that was only a few minutes from us. But the traffic to the North Shore was horrendous, so we quickly turned around and headed to the only other trail we knew, Maunawili, nine miles from a mountain lookout down to Waimanalo.
I mean, we knew we weren’t going to go nine miles. We’re not CRAZY.
But I must admit we thought we’d get a little further then five minutes.
It turns out that even though Lincoln doesn’t nap anymore, doing a trail over what should be nap time is too much of a reach, and before five minutes were out he was crying because,
- The path was muddy.
- A leaf stuck to his shoe.
- No one would carry him.
- There were rocks in the path.
- There was a path at all.
So I am here to report that I am *pretty* sure that if there is no three year old melt down, or the sudden realization that that horn is YOUR car alarm that just started going off (yes, that’s correct, we never got out of hearing distance of our car)….anyway, if there isn’t any of that noise, and you were actually to get out of sight distance to the highway, I think that the first .2 miles of the Maunawilli trail is probably delightful and beautiful, and the rest of it might be even better.
Even in that short time we saw these beautiful trees, light brown and curving.
And a few waterfalls too.
It’s really probably a good thing we only made it five minutes. If I can have this many pictures about NOT doing a trail, imagine how long this post would be if we had gone further.
